Tips on getting your photos under the Auroras

Here at Aurora in Alaska our primary goal is to take our guests to the best location for the Auroras. This doesn’t mean this is all we do. Our crew loves to help capture the moment you experience. Today, we want to take a moment to ensure our guests understand how to take the prefect photos with our incredible Aurora in Alaska night sky.

Tip 1: Stay still! In rare cases guests faces appear blurry, this occurrence is typically a result of individuals moving (even the smallest amount) during the long exposure shots. Our aim is to deliver the highest quality Aurora photos, which necessitate long exposure times. Nevertheless, any motion during these shots can inadvertently lead to the blurriness that you have observed. To minimize such issues, we employ tripods to stabilize the camera and kindly request guests to remain still during the photo sessions.

Tip 2: Get lots of photos. We love to take your photos and are happy to take multiple photos. This not only gives you a chance to share your experience with others, but ensures that we have multiple chances for that prefect photo. Don’t be shy, come up to our photographer for 3-5 photos at a time and come back again to ensure you have your time in the spotlight. That aurora dances and coming back allows us to ensure you have a variety of photos to remember the moment.

Tip 3: Multiple photographers ensure multiple perspectives. Just like any other art, our photographers have their own style and personalities in taking photos of you and the auroras. On nights that we have multiple vans, we bring multiple photographers. Our advice to you is to get photos taken with each. This not only ensure you have multiple photos to choose from, but gives you different Alaskan scenery and styles of your photo.

Tip 4: Remember that the photographer can see more auroras through the lens they we can with our naked eyes. They are there to guide you to stand in the prefect spot. But please be aware of your surroundings, the snow can be icy and it can be easy to miss things in the dark.

Tip 5: Don’t be a camera hog. Please keep in mind there are others waiting. We love to snap those photos, but do need to ensure every guest has the chance to get their photos in. This is why we recommend coming back after your first photos to ensure you get those fun poses and variety photos in.

It is ultimately the guests' responsibility to approach the photographers for additional photos. Our primary commitment is to provide guests with the experience of witnessing the auroras as promised, and all unedited photos are complimentary with edited photos available for purchase when the link is sent out within 7 days of the tour.

Incredible Aurora in Alaska Adventure Tour Itinerary

Here at AURORA IN ALASKA we pride ourselves in using first hand accounts of cloud coverage as well as top of the line forecasting systems...

Here at AURORA IN ALASKA we pride ourselves in using first hand accounts of cloud coverage as well as top of the line forecasting systems to ensure that you have the best possible chances in the interior for Aurora viewing. Because of this we do not have a set location. Please be prepared for your tour by using the restroom before we leave and expect at least an hour long drive to ensure we are out of the city light pollution for the best viewing experience.

Most evenings we go to only one or two locations, but in the chance that our first choices are not clear skies please be advised that we may pack up and move to a better area.

At the best location of the evening our guides will set up a warm fire, refreshments table and chairs for your comfort. Reindeer sausage, nightly vegan specials, hot cocoa and other refreshments to warm your belly will be available.

The photographer will set up their cameras and prepare for photos under the magical dancing lights. It does take time to set up, but our photographers are experts and happy to help you adjust your own cameras to the correct setting if you choose to take your own photos as well. We do advise that you have a tripod for the long exposures needed.

We do want to remind you that the camera lens is able to pick up more than the human eye and we do use the camera to see where the auroras are appearing. If you think you are seeing the auroras and are not sure please ask a guide and we will happily assist you.

As the night goes on our guides are happy to answer questions, tell stories of the interior and take your photos under the night sky. Be creative with your photos, we love to see what you guys come up with.

If at anytime you find yourself cold and needing to warm up, we do keep the vans running for your comfort. Please keep your shoes and socks unless you are adding toe warmers (which you can ask your guides for) to ensure that our vans stay clean and tidy.

Although we do try to go to location with some kind of restroom facility, sometimes that is not the best location for your adventure. Please let your guide know if you have any restroom needs and we are happy to find a proper solution for you.

When it is time to prepare to head back into Fairbanks, your guides and photographers will begin to pack up all the equipment from the evening. Although we do not need your help cleaning up, we do ask that you keep our Alaskan habits clean, by throwing your trash in the proper container.

On our journey back to your location, feel free to ask questions, share your experience and get to know the others on your tour. Here in the Golden Heart of Alaska we pride ourselves on our warm nature and community bonds and hope that you get a chance to enjoy that Alaskan Spirit while with us.

Once your photo link is live and ready to view our team will both email and text you with all the information about your photos as well as a link to leave us a review. We appreciate your time and your patience while you waiting for your photos and know that our team is dedicated to get these to you within 7 days of your tour.

No more waiting in the lobby and worrying that you missed us. Our WooDelivery system allows you to see when you are assigned a guide via text and email. The ETA's given are estimated times and are not guaranteed. Please allow 15 minutes on either side of this ETA as we can not predict traffic flow or guest delays. How do you determine if a night is a refundable night?

Due to the nature of the human eye, we do have to standardize how we evaluate a refundable night. Our guides are trained to spot even the faintest Auroras and use their cameras to help ensure proof of viewing is available to guests and staff. Any amount of aurora that is visible while out on the tour will determine if the trip will qualify for a refund. If the guide is unable to view the lights, by his eyes or camera, everyone will qualify for the Aurora Guarantee. The Aurora Guarantee is a 50% refund on the total trip.

If your night looks like it has a low viewing chance we will reach out the morning of your tour to give you three options. This ensures that you are given the most up to date information about your tour. Please remember forecasts are scientific predictions and not a schedule of events. Your three options on nights like this are a full refund, to reschedule or to risk it and try without our guarantee.

It is very rare to have an unsuccessful trip on a guaranteed night, but please understand that even with the best forecasting tools available the Auroras are a natural phenomenon. This means we do not have a switch to turn them on or off. We do our absolute best to ensure every night is successful. This does sometimes mean waiting in one or two clear sky locations, or chasing the auroras. Each night means a different approach based off of weather patterns. For more insight into how we find good locations please view our blog on “

           CHOOSING WHICH DAY TO PICK-

Book the soonest available night. Let us know if you have multiple nights that you are available for an Aurora in Alaska tour. If we see a day is standing out as great forecast or terrible forecast we will contact you via email & text. Your goal is to see the Auroras and we want to make that happen.

Here you can find information such as the low temperature for the evening and the aurora forecast. If you have any questions, concerns, changes to be made to your pick up location or a new friend that wants to join this when to let us know. We are happy to help as much as we can and do our best, but please contact ASAP with any changes.

           DRESS FOR THE WEATHER :)

Reading our text and email will tell you how cold it is. Due to the northrn position of Fairbanks, Alaska we do most of our tours in the winter months. This means snow and cold weather. Taking the time to dress appropriately will ensure you can stand and watch the Auroras for as long as you want.

We do not want our guests cold or uncomfortable, so we build a fire on cold nights whenever possible and our vans are always running during our tours. We do have limited blankets for our guests as well. Remember that viewing the Auroras is an outdoor event and being properly clothed for our weather will ensure you get the best view. If you find yourself unsure as to where to find proper clothing or have questions please reach out before your tour. To assist you we have put together a quick guide and suggest the following for each temperature range:

            60-40 degrees Fahrenheit-

This is consider sweater and jacket weather, but we do suggest a good base layer. Our tours are at night and it is much easier to take a layer off than to warm up if you do get cold. Wool socks and hiking shoes are good if there is no snow or slush (melting snow).

            40-20 degrees Fahrenheit-

Remember again these may feel like okay weather in the sun, but at night this is cold. One base layer, your regular clothes and a sweater under your snow gear is very helpful at this temperature. For your boots go up half a size to allow wool socks and toe warmers if needed.

            20-0 degrees Fahrenheit-

Wool long-john or base layer is recommended. Regular clothes, sweater, then snow gear on top. Ski masks or scarves are helpful with keeping noses and cheeks warm. You may want to have a knitted glove on and then your snow mittens over the top. Again leaving space for hand warmers is very helpful, this also gives you space to add a layer under gloves and in boots. For boots, snow boots rated for -5 or colder is helpful. Going half a size up allows thicker socks and toe warmers.

            0- NEGATIVE 20 degrees Fahrenheit-

Following the guide above, you may want to add another layer such as silks or synthetics. Wool again is great, but if you are not used to these temperatures it is best to add a layer. Purchasing something such as wool insoles for your boots is helpful at this temperature as the cold your feet feel typically comes from the bottom of your boot. We suggest finding boots that are rated for at least -30. The cold weather ratings found on clothes are not saying they will keep you warm at those temperatures, but that you will not get frostbite at that rated temperature. Keep this in mind when making your purchases. When in doubt, grab another layer.

            NEGATIVE 20 - NEGATIVE 40 degrees Fahrenheit-

We do our tours until -40, this means you may see these temperatures. Our vans will of course be running no matter the temperature, but you should be extra prepared for these chilly nights. Please read all of the above and add another layer. If you feel at all cold, find ways to warm up such as walking around the fire, sitting in the van or let your guide know so we can ensure your comfort & safety. We do live in an artic climate and do see these cold temperatures and want you prepared. We have no control over the temperature, but can control how we prepare ourselves.

           PREPARE FOR PICK-UP-

Pick up runs 9pm-10pm. We understand this is a large window, but our tour does stay open for guests to book until 6pm the night of the tour. As soon as we have our routes and vans ready the guides will send you a text message with your ETA. They will send a second text 10 minutes before arriving to your location. Finally, they will send an arrival text when they are at your pick-up location.

Please ensure that you use these text messages to be ready to go. This includes gathering any cameras or extra refreshments you are bringing (backpacks are preferred & ensure you are less likely to leave something behind), getting your proper weather attire on and using the restroom. If something comes up or you need more time, please let us know so we can adjust our routes to accommodate.

           USE THE RESTROOM BEFORE PICK-UP-

We do our best to go to locations that have restroom options, but our goal is to view the Auroras. This means we may go somewhere with no restroom or a cold outhouse. Yes, we understand this is not ideal, but Alaska is still mostly wild and doesn't accomodate for our tolietry needs. If you have any restroom needs that need addressed please let your guide know.

Taking pictures of the Aurora with your iPhone

The best way to capture the Aurora is to let the Aurora In Alaska team of professional photographers help you on our tour. ;)

if you have IPhone 11 Pro or newer you can take some amazing photos and sometimes even videos.

An easy way to figure this out is by looking at the back of your phone. If it has the three cameras the your good to go. If you don't have three cameras you may still be able to see some Aurora in your pictures but not with very much clarity. It will come out looking dark and fuzzy unless it's a spectacular night with a very bright sky.

will always significantly improve your night sky photos.

The reason for the tripod is the iPhone is taking what is called a long exposure picture. This means the shutter on the camera stays open for typically around three seconds. Any movement during this time will cause the photo to blur.

          and never use the flash.

You will see a slider at the bottom of your iPhone when in night mode. You can adjust the exposure upper down as needed however I usually always leave my exposure on Auto.

there are no tricks you simply point and shoot. While it is fairly difficult to video Aurora on an iPhone and it typically only bright enough to be see on very high Aurora activity nights.

In summary well you can use an iPhone 11 pro or newer to capture photos and videos of the Aurora that look fairly decent for your social media they are not photos that would be able to printed out for wall art due to the clarity. If using a properly equipped full frame camera you're able to capture crystal clear images of the aurora and yourself that can be turned into beautiful wall art.

A: Great question! We actually choose the location each day based off of the weather, cloud coverage and aurora forecasts. Our guides look for the best areas for each individual night. Of course some locations tend to be our favorites, but that’s only because the geographic location provides advantages for clearer skies. No matter where we go it’s good to know that we go up to 60 miles outside the the Fairbanks city limits, this allows us to get out of the light pollution from the city and freedom to find that prefect spot for you.

A: We actually pick up at most locations that are within 5 miles of Fairbanks city center. Most hotels fall into this category. If you have any questions just let us know the address of your hotel, airbnb or home and we are more than happy to see if we can pick you up from your location. If you do happen to be at a location we cannot pick up at, we meet at the Walmart parking lot. This lot is in a central location, easy to get to, well lit and there’s only one Walmart.

A: We understand the worry about nature getting in the way. Don’t worry we have your back. If you end up on a night that has bad cloud coverage or weather that gets in the way of your viewing, we give you the option to get a:

           Q: What about Bathrooms?

A: We understand that most of our guests are used to the modern bathrooms. Unfortunately, due to the nature of Aurora chasing we do not have control over bathrooms. We do our best to go to locations with a restroom, but cannot guarantee bathrooms on our adventures. We do our best to stop before and after main locations to allow guests to use the modern bathroom. Please don’t hesitate to let your guides know if you need additional restrooms. We understand our Alaskan ways a new to many and want our guests as comfortable as possible.

A: This can be a frustrating wait. We understand that it’s not fun waiting. Any booking directly through us via phone or our website are the easiest for us to control. These typically take 3-5 business days.

Third party bookings (such as AirBnB experiences, TripAdvisor or Viator) take longer. Expect these to take 10-15 business days since they are having to be processed twice. Sometimes they do get delayed, so please reach out and let us know. We don’t want you to wait any longer if we can help it. A quick call, text or email asking us to check in on a refund it always welcome.

            - This is one of the best locations close to town. With an altitude of 2,890 feet, Murphy Dome is one of the highest peaks in the Fairbanks area, offering 360 degree views. It is just a short 30 minute drive from town on a road that is regularly maintained. If the Aurora is out, this location will not disappoint.

            - A very nice pull out on the side of the road. This location falls into second place with just a 45 minute drive on regularly maintained roads, offering north facing views with very low light pollution and vibrant views of the stars and Aurora. Along the way out there are multiple pull offs you can stop to view the lights. The Borealis pretty much dominates the sky where ever you are out when they are out.

            - This is quite the drive especially in the winter, but the skies are incredible. This area has zero light pollution, making for some of the best Aurora photography. This is a 58 mile drive or 1.5 hour drive to a large pull out on the side of the Elliot Highway (the haul road). Along the way there are many pull offs to stop and view. This location is also the last place you will have any cell service when traveling North to Deadhorse, the village that is only a few miles away from Prudhoe Bay, site of North America's largest oil discovery.

             - Quick and easy, it’s located close to town. If you don’t want to travel far this is a great convenient and safe location to drive to before catching your flight out of Fairbanks. Just a short 15 minute drive from town, the landscape overlooks the frozen Tanana River and bluffs making an excellent backdrop to capture the lights.

             - This location is the easiest of them all to get to, it’s roughly 5 min from town. This is a common make-out and watch the sunset location for locals and a great place to easily view Aurora at night. Of course there are some draw backs to this location such as light pollution, ice fog at times, and traffic.

We regularly visit these locations and many more on our Aurora Tours, as well as many other locations that are a little more difficult to get to without a local guide. However, the above locations will not disappoint if the lights are out. Having a local guide can significantly help your odds of catching those perfect aurora pictures and locations. Please note, if you are not used to driving on the slick, icy roads any of these locations could be hazardous to drive to, especially at night. You also always want to keep a sharp eye out for moose as they are always on the road when you least expect them to be and can be fatal if hit. I suggest driving to the location you would like to view the Aurora from in daylight before going out at night. The team here at Williams Premier Tours is always here to help and answer any questions! If you would like to book a trip with us you can

There are three main elements that go into determining your chances of viewing the Magical Aurora Borealis.

CLEAR SKYS - in order to look up through the atmosphere to see the lights with an unobstructed view you will want a clear sky for the best Aurora viewing. You can view the lights through light cloud coverage however the more clear the sky is the clearer the lights will be. A helpful resource for viewing cloud coverage is Ventusky Click HERE to view it. Of course if you have the Aurora app it will tell you the cloud coverage % as well.

DARK SKYS - Once you determine that the cloud coverage is acceptable to you will want to find some locations to view the Aurora from that are unobstructed by city lights. The city lights will make it difficult to photograph the aurora as well as view it. In locations where there are no light pollution the night sky will become alive! An easy way to determine if your B&B or when finding areas with low light pollution is THE LIGHT POLLUTION MAP click here HERE to view. I also have written a exlent blog post revealing some fantastic locations with low or no light pollution in Fairbanks AK. Click HERE to view.

AURORA ACTIVITY - So we have determined that we have clear sky’s with low or no clouds and we have picked out some locations to view the Northern Lights from with no light pollution obstruction our view. Now we need to determine if the Aurora will even show its self. The way we do this by using the KP Index which in simple terms measures the Aurora storm on a scale from 1-9. We have had great success with anything over a KP 1. Of course the bigger the number the more intense the Aurora will be. The BEST resource for tracking Aurora activity in Alaska is the University of Alaska’s Geophysical Institute Aurora Forecast. Check it out by clicking HERE (https://www.gi.alaska.edu/monitors/aurora-forecast)

While these are the main determining factors when viewing the aurora there are also a few other things to keep in mind such as the moon cycles. For example when there is a full moon it is very bright and dose take away from the brightness of the aurora. So the perfect Aurora viewing storm would be on a night with a new moon, no clouds and a high KP prediction.
